Thanksgiving, Oregon, November 2005

I visited JMT in OR. We made a fake turkey out of seitan and garlic, picked horseradish and yacon and persimmons, and visited the beach. We also visited the AHT memorial Throop Loop trail.

Digging Bruce's Yacon

Check out that yacon root! Bruce digs up dozens of them from one plant, a sunflower relative. (I lost a post-trip bet with JMT when I erroneously predicted that Whole Foods would certainly carry yacon.)

`Throop Loop' trail

Start of the Throop Loop trail on the Fitton Green open space outside Corvallis. AHT helped acquire the land and build the trail, and it was named for him after his death.
Check out that tall grass prarie!

Oregon Coast and the Aquarium

Mom has become quite skilled at automobile maintenence!
We spend the morning at Seal Rock, S. of Newport.
Kelp!
What are the white things here? Baffling...
They are all sea anenomes (covered in shell bits). I've never seen so many...
More anenomes...
... and more.
Mussels.
JMT prepares to launch.
Check out that carrot!
We visit the fishies at Oregon's cool aquarium. (Oddly, the fish are new -- the aquarium has usually specialized in everything but: birds, star fish, frogs, otters, jellies, etc.)
Octopus has just been fed.
Mom moves faster than a fish.

The Garden and the Persimmons

JMT heads to the garden to dig horseradish.
Check out that persimmon tree! From here on out, lots of persimmon photos. They're just excruciatingly pretty fruits...
Note that Corvallis Gazette-Times paper delivery bag, from my route circa 1985.
The persimmon leaves fell to the ground two days ago, every single one...
Persimmons at night...
(No photoshop on anything -- it's all ambient light at dusk...)
Dilating persimma.
