South Sister, August 2004

We went out to Oregon to climb S. Sister, with multiple Daellenbachs and other associated personnel. Previous expeditions to the Sisters region include the N. Sister 2002 trip, S. Sister in 1983 and 1985, and nearly-annual hiking trips of AHT + JMT throughout the last 20+ years.

We take the short trail up: 4 miles to the summit, with nearly a vertical mile (!) of elevation gain.

JMT and Chuck discuss at the campground.
HLT eats in the dark.
We hit the trailhead around 4.
Keith levitates that pack.

The moon descends.
First view of the Sister!

Amy and JMT navigate past Mt. Bachelor.
Broken Top blocks the Sun.
Alex and Great-Uncle Chuck.
Uncle Keith foists Goo on all!

JMT shows off those fava beans!

Across the sumit crater to the top.
HLT hangs at the summit.

We encounter the bizarre but fully-grown arctic watermelon.

Attire is worn, in proper (?) remembrance.

JMT's hat has flown away!
Keith retrieves it...

The obligatory summit shot, with Middle and N. Sisters behind. Standing (L-R): Joe, Alex, Julie, Mike, Amy, Keith, Heather, Henry, and butterfly. Kneeling: Monica, Chuck, Janet.
The butterflies return, from our last trip c. 1985. What are they doing: migrating? Eating watermelon? Someone certainly knows, but it is not I.

JMT levitates a rock.
JMT fails to realize that the butterflies she is photographing flap behind her.
